EU ErP Directive

ErP Directive (2009/125/EC) Introduction

In order to improve the EuP Directive 2005/32/EC and further expand its scope, the European Union issued 2009 year 10  On March 31, the Ecological Requirements Directive 2009/125/EC for Energy-related Products was officially released. This directive stipulates the framework of ecological design requirements for energy-related products. Starting from November 20, 2009, the ErP Directive 2009/125/EC replaces the original EuP Directive (2005/32/EC, 2008/28/EC).

The original IM based on the EuP command will be converted to IM based on this directive at the same time.

Compared with the EuP directive, the main change of the ErP directive is that the energy-consuming products (Energy- using Products) was expanded to Energy-related Products, expanding the scope of the EuP Directive. Energy-related products refer to products that affect energy consumption when placed on the EU market and/or put into use; or parts whose environmental performance can be independently assessed and intended to be assembled into products covered by this directive. In addition to the energy-consuming products covered by the original EuP directive, it also includes other products that conserve energy, such as windows, insulation materials or water-using products (such as shower heads, faucets, etc.). Like EuP, the ErP directive does not apply to means of transport of people and goods.

The ErP  directive is not a directive for product requirements, but is just a framework directive. In accordance with the relevant provisions of this directive, the EU further formulates directives on the ecological design requirements that certain types of energy-consuming products need to comply with, called "Implementing Measures", referred to as IM. The implementation details that have been promulgated and implemented are as follows:

Basic steps for ErP certification

1. Conformity assessment

According to the requirements of the ErP Directive, manufacturers can implement "internal design controls" (Annex IV of the ErP Directive) or "environmental management systems"

(ErP Directive Annex V) Choose one of the two assessment modes for assessment.

2. Organize and form technical documents (TDF)

Manufacturers must form technical documentation

Technical documentation should include information on the design, manufacturing, operation and final disposal of the product

Details will be clarified through the implementation measures of each product

3. Issue a Declaration of Conformity (DoC)

Basic information

Directives and standards to be followed

4. Apply CE mark

Coordinated standard testing (EMC, LVD, etc.)

Label CE mark
